Pega’s 3 Design Systems
2 min readApr 5, 2023
The Pega Platform has been growing exponentially lately and part of their exponential growth are some growing pains that their design architects are going through. Currently, there are 3 design systems that you can choose from.
- Constellation: This is Pega’s newest design system which they are pushing hard to get people to use. The UIs are built out of view-based React components which has never been done before in Pega. Since Constellation is brand new, there are some advanced features that are available on the other two design systems that are not available on Constellation. But right now as you are reading this article, Pega is working on adding them to Constellation.
- Cosmos: If you are not quite ready to work with Constellation, you can work with the more stable Cosmos design system. This is a section-based design system which uses Pega’s traditional design capabilities. All of Pega’s features are currently available in Cosmos. The only downside to Cosmos, is the fact that migrating from Cosmos to Constellation will be a daunting task.
- UI-Kit: This is Pega’s older design system which is becoming obsolete. Just like Cosmos, UI-Kit is section-based. However, Pega is currently working on a tool to migrate applications using UI-Kit to Constellation. If you would like to create an appliation with UI-Kit, you cannot create it using the “Create application” wizard. Instead, you must create it manually through the Application records.
